Practice Areas

Sharon's main areas of practice are property law and conveyancing, residential and commercial lending security, wills, succession law and probate and administration of estates.  In addition to these core areas, Sharon has also often acted for clients on quantification of personal injury claims, incorporation and organisation of limited liability domestic companies, preparation of Powers of Attorney and drafting of and advising on various types of contracts.

Property Law & Conveyancing
In property law and conveyancing, Sharon has acted for local as well as international clients on the sale and purchase of land, dwelling-houses, condominium units, luxury residential properties and commercial properties.  Sharon's role has included advising clients on legal issues affecting their transactions, preparing and finalising sale and purchase documents and guiding clients through the sale and purchase process from the preliminary stages to post-completion.  Sharon has also gained experience acting in the transfer of luxury properties and  high value commercial properties.  In such transactions, she has advised clients on issues specifically relating to those types of properties, prepared comprehensive property title reports as well as prepared the requisite documents to transfer real property either by direct property transfer or by way of sale of shares in property holding companies.

Mortgages and Lending Security
Sharon has also practiced extensively in the area of mortgages and lending security.  She has advised several leading local, regional and international financial institutions on legal issues affecting residential and commercial mortgages and charges.  She has also been responsible for the preparation of the requisite documents to secure loan facilities advanced by such institutions and secured by real property, business assets and sailing vessels.  On the reverse side, Sharon has also acted for personal and commercial borrowers, advising them on legal issues relative to their residential or commercial loan financing and preparing and finalising loan security documents required by clients' lending institutions.

Wills, Succession Law & Probate Practice
Succession law and probate practice has been the third specialty area of Sharon's practice.  Sharon has advised clients on issues of succession law, devolution of real and personal property, testamentary issues and Wills.  She has also drafted Wills to incorporate clients' testamentary wishes.  In the area of probate practice, Sharon has advised clients on obtaining Grants of Probate, Letters of Administration and other Grants of Representation and has prepared the necessary documents for clients to obtain such Grants of Representation.

Sharon always welcomes the opportunity to combine her practice in property law with her succession law practice.  In such instances she has advised clients with respect to the devolution and transfer of Barbados real property forming part of deceased persons' estate and has completed the requisite documents to  transfer such property either by way of vesting in beneficiaries or by sale by the estate.

Professional pursuits aside, Sharon has been an avid amateur ballroom dancer for the past 15 years, having been awarded the IDTA's Second Gold Bar.  She is also a foreign language enthusiast who enjoys polishing her Spanish and French language skills.

Carter, an Attorney-at-Law with over 15 years at the Barbados Bar.  The mission of the practice is to offer clients quality legal service in a professional and responsive manner.

Legal Education

Sharon obtained her Bachelor of Laws Degree with Honours from the University of the West Indies in 1997.  Following her completion of a two year period of legal training at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, in 1999 Sharon was awarded the Legal Education Certificate of the Council of Legal Education.  Sharon was admitted to the Barbados Bar in October 1999 after which she travelled to the United Kingdom to read for a Master of Laws at the University of Hull.  In July 2001 Sharon was admitted to the Degree of Master of Laws (International Business Law) by the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.

Professional Experience

Sharon returned to Barbados in September 2000 and in December 2000 joined a small law practice where she was fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to focus on  two of her favourite specialty areas: conveyancing and property law and mortgages.  Sharon continued in private practice for the following 15 years, working during that period with three of the leading law firms on the island.  Over the course of her years at the Bar Sharon has gained significant experience in various aspects of legal practice, with specific focus on property law and conveyancing, mortgages and lending security and wills and estates.
